Endocrinology
Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders. Hormones are substances that regulate the function of many systems in the body, including metabolism, the menstrual cycle, growth, mood, and calcium-sugar balance. An endocrinologist treats diseases related to the improper functioning of endocrine glands such as the thyroid, pancreas, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, and ovaries.
The most common endocrine disorders include hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, diabetes, Hashimoto’s disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and hormonal disorders affecting fertility. Symptoms of hormonal imbalances are often nonspecific and may include chronic fatigue, weight fluctuations, acne, irregular menstruation, or hair loss.
Treatment in endocrinology mainly involves pharmacotherapy, preceded by thorough laboratory and imaging diagnostics. Early detection of hormonal disorders helps prevent complications and improves the patient’s quality of life. In case of concerning symptoms, it is advisable to consult a specialist endocrinologist.
